DIY signs bring real-time bus arrivals to Philadelphia stops

Dec 29, 2025

What’s going on

  • Unofficial bus-stop signs have appeared at some SEPTA stops in Philadelphia. They display real-time arrival information pulled from public transit data. The effort has been linked to a street artist known as “Bus Stop Banksy.”
  • The signs are aimed at riders who can't easily use phone-based tracking. That includes people without smartphones, people with limited data plans, and riders with spotty internet access. Some stops also have accessibility issues that make existing information harder to use.
  • The installations have gone up at regular street stops, not inside stations. They're meant to be readable at the curb where riders wait. They mimic the basic function of digital arrival boards used in some other transit systems.
  • SEPTA operates buses, trolleys, and subways across Philadelphia and surrounding counties. Many SEPTA bus stops are marked only with a pole sign and a route number. Real-time arrival info is usually available through SEPTA's app and third-party apps.
  • The artists use existing real-time feeds to generate countdown-style arrival times. They then mount a display at the stop without SEPTA approval. The work sits between public service and an unsanctioned street installation.
  • SEPTA and city officials have not announced a formal partnership for the signs. Agencies typically control what's installed on public right-of-way and at transit stops. So far, any response appears limited and case-by-case, with no broad policy publicly laid out.

Why it matters

  • Reliable arrival information changes how people use buses. It can reduce missed buses and long waits, especially on routes with uneven service. For riders with fewer resources, the lack of on-street information can be a real barrier.
  • The project also highlights a basic infrastructure gap. If real-time data exists but is mostly accessible through phones, access stays uneven. That becomes a practical equity issue, not a technical one.
